BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU(BJJ) IN BAY AREA-ALAMEDA-EL CERRITO-HAYWARD AND SAN FRANCISCO!

What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art that uses grappling techniques, which enable practitioners to subdue their opponents without the use of punching and kicking. This eliminates the need to use excessive force in a real life self-defense situation. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu emphasizes the use of leverage and technique over strength and power.

Benefits of BJJ

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu challenges the entire body, developing coordination, balance, agility and poise. Kids who participate in Jiu-Jitsu are proven to have better attention spans. They also learn respect, discipline, responsibility, and to work as a team while participating in class activities.

Sergio Silva is a former World Champion in Submission Wrestling.

Also a former Champion of U.S Open Championship of BJJ and multiple times medalist in Pan Americans Championship.

Sergio Silva is a several times Brazilian National Champion and international champion.

Sergio Silva’s love of grappling began in 1985 when he started studying Judo under his uncle, Edgar Barharto. While his passion grew for grappling so did his enthusiasm for playing other sports such as playing futsal and swimming. As time passed so did his interest in sports. At the age of 12 Sergio discovered Capoeira and in 1991 he started practicing Mixed Martial arts. Then 1993 as luck would have it a very nice BJJ academy opened two blocks away from his house, Academy Guardian. A black belt instructor named ALexandre Penao ran the academy. There Sergio began training 2 to 4 times a day. While he was training he managed to find the time to teach Judo as a brown belt, to pre-schoolers. Then after 5 months of dedicated practice Sergio decided to train at his best friend’s Gym, Arena AABB. There Sergio trained until he was a purple belt under Evanri Gurgel.

In 1997 Sergio Silva got his purple and was invited by his teacher Helion Soneca to train with Gustavo Mugiatti and Cuca from Gracie Barra Curitiba. This was a golden opportunity for Sergio to learn a great deal from these masters. Sergio was studying the gentle art with the masters until 1999 when he decided to go to United States. He envisioned passing his knowledge of BJJ while also and improving his teaching style. Sergio arrived in Orlando in September of 1999. That following January he met Marcelo Grosso and Marcelo Monteiro from the Team De La Riva. As a result of this meeting his life would change and his BJJ game would move to the level of mastery.

He trained with them to participate in the grand Pan American championship 2000-After the tournament he was invited to train at Ralph Gracie academy in San Francisco where he received his brown belt at the end of 2000. He was then asked to teach in Seattle and then to open an academy in Washington. After his work was completed and both academies were running successfully he headed back San Francisco. He started working with Kids and teenagers as a counselor at Seneca Center while training and working toward his dream of opening his own academy. In 2003 Sergio Silva received his black belt from his friend Marcelo Monteiro (www.bjjcoach.com) and his life once again began moving in another direction.

In august of 2003 Sergio got involved in running the Open Door academy in Oakland where the main idea was to teach and train BJJ without focusing on competition in tournaments. The objective was to learn the art itself. In the following year 2004 Sergio stopped competing and focused only on teaching and learning through his teaching.

It was a very beautiful connection and gave him time to realize that BJJ is not only about competing and getting first place but also about learning life lessons that BJJ offers to us in our day a day life!

In 2005 Sergio dove back into competition and started to develop a very solid BJJ and MMA team with the people that he was training with. His team consists of men, women and children from all walks of life, young and old. Through the years Sergio has realized that BJJ can and does change lives and he feels very blessed to share the journey with anyone interested.

Recently(2007) Sergio Silva left Open Door Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to open his NEW academy in Alameda-California!
